Oh the joys of being a homeowner

This post goes out to all my peeps who are currently in the process of buying their first house. :)

Sunday afternoon at our house is usually pretty calm and almost always consists of me doing laundry. This past weekend was no different. I was working on my second load of clothes when I noticed the dryer just wasn't drying. Being the nerds that we are, I ran downstairs to check the inside and outside humidity level thinking it could be the culprit for the slow drying time. I was perplexed when I read that it was hovering around 48-50% (pretty low for around here - and normal for April). Hmmm. I checked the lint trap again - empty. I unloaded 1/2 the clothes and attempted another drying cycle. 45 minutes later - Damp clothes! It took 4 cycles to mostly dry a medium sized load. Perplexed!

So yesterday afternoon I had to work on laundry again since I couldn't finish it as I normally do on Sundays. This time I pulled out our new fancy vacuum and sucked every nook & cranny I could until my dust cup was FULL of lint. Wow. I was impressed. Although I really shouldn't be since this was the first time I had throughly cleaned out the lint collection area since purchasing the thing back in 2002. I was positive I had solved my problem so I threw in my recently washed load and promptly starting washing another. I felt all warm and smart. I was...WRONG WRONG WRONG! The dryer still didn't dry! UGH! What are we going to do!? We don't want to buy a new dryer because then the washer wouldn't match and we'd have to get a new set and haul them up/down the stairs and then I'd want one of those new fancy front loaders, in blue of course, that cost more than my college tuition... it was not looking good.

At this point is was 8:30pm. I had wet clothes in the washer and damp clothes in the dryer. In between my ranting and raving over a sink full of dishes, Paul had an idea! DING! He walked outside with a flashlight and checked the exterior dryer vent (which is conveniently located on the 2nd story on the highest side of the house). DING DING DING! We've got a problem and hopefully a solution to our dryer issue! Can you guess?

About a half hour later, Paul returned from Home Depot with a 24 foot ladder. TWENTY FOUR FEET. Yes. We are insane. Thankfully he did 'shop around' and got a better deal at the Home Depot - Lowes wanted $35 more for the exact same thing (I would have paid it b/c I just love Lowes - they are all clean and pretty and helpful)!

A rough visual of the location of the vent (since I'm all about the visuals) -

(photo from the lovely county tax website so I don't have a photo from this angle and it was easy to snatch)

Picture this: it's dark, windy and we're wrangling a 24 foot ladder up the side of the house to remove a bird's nest. A HUGE, thick, fluffy birds nest, IN the D*A*R*K. Thankfully our lower neighbors spotted Paul with the MASSIVE ladder and came to my aid in holding the darn thing steady while Paul climbed up and dug out the nest. There were a couple of scary moments - especially when the frightened, angry bird came flying out straight at Paul's head!

So, that was our Monday evening.
2 loads of laundry done
$100 spent on 24 ft ladder we have no room to store
1 bird's nest removed

Ahh, the joys of homeownership! Best wishes to all of you who are looking/buying your first home! It's so much fun (and so much work)! :)

April Showers...er, storms, bring May flowers?!

Wow. 2 wild weather weekends in a row! Here's the last 2 weekends in photos...

Easter weekend we saw 2+ inches of snow in the mountains around Asheville.
We rented a house for the weekend to visit with my parents,
grandparents and aunt, uncle & cousins (thankfully the house had 5
bedrooms and 3 bathrooms!). We expected it to be cool/cold... but not
like this!

We arrived on a nice sunny Friday afternoon - ahhh spring!

Rock wall and happy green plants

Mom & Dad (with nice green trees in the background)

Friday night: Hmmm, did they predict flurries? Eh, might as well enjoy the spa anyway!

Saturday morning... we woke up to this... is the ground (and SUPER STEEP road) covered in snow!?!?!?!!?

The Blue Ridge Parkway and Craggy Gardens are just over that way - and it just wouldn't stop snowing!

Rocks all covered in snow - poor green plants ain't looking so spring-y

Icicle on the house

Then this past weekend, we had some nice strong storms blow through. Well,
actually, they're still blowing through (just the CRAZY wind, not rain). I saw no
less than a dozen HUGE hardwood trees blown over on my way home this afternoon. Thanks to 2.5 inches of rain and gusts of wind at 50mph+, beautiful old trees have fallen.

Here's what we saw on Sunday afternoon -
After hearing a distict sound the following rang out in our house, "HAIL! HAIL! HAIL! Move the recently purchased plants - we can't afford to lose the $50+ worth of tomato plants to HAIL!!!" Ok, so, maybe we were insane b/c with hail came some pretty impressive lightning. Thankfully, Paul is brave and insane, so the plants (and he) are ok.

Several minutes AFTER the hail had fallen (I was too busy freaking out while Paul was outside saving plants to take a photo AS the hail was falling)

Detail (some good nickel sized pieces, thankfully most were just pea sized)

Backyard - big, fat pond middle right (cloudy water) and the recently saved new plants on the patio under the table (if you look real close, you can see the newly planted willow tree almost completely bent over in the wind)

Storm clouds lurking....

BUT, we did get some nice spring flowers... the blooming pinkie hawthorn

Wii in the house!

Wii found it! We went on a Wii hunt last weekend (after seeing the Wal-Mart sales ad which mentioned something about each store getting 7 Wiis in). After shopping at 3 Target's, Sam's (we're longer members!), Circuit City, Best Buy and Wal-Mart, we were saddened to find empty shelves and less than helpful salespeople.

So... Paul was headed out to take a bike ride and stopped by our local Wally world one last time and happened upon some exciting news! There were Wii's in our area. Four, to be exact, at the Wal-Mart just 30 miles up the road. Completely ditching his bike ride, he drove out into the rural wilds to find the last of the Wii's in Raleigh. He arrived at the Louisburg Wal-Mart to claim one of the last 2 they had.

Needless to say, we did not have a very productive weekend after he came back home and hooked it up. Thankfully I had been diligent in my housecleaning and laundry BEFORE he returned, otherwise we'd be out of clean clothes and dishes. (Eh, who needs clothes and dishes when you're playing the Wii anyway?!)

Behold! The Wii!

Games:

Wii Sports (love, love love the bowling!)

Wii Play (I love the Mii search, Paul, not so much)

Wario Ware: Smooth Moves (Insane game! I can't even begin to describe the INSANITY!)

Blazing Angels (Uh, I don't think I can play this one, Paul was rockin' on it though)

Hopefully I'll have some *real* pictures to share. You've got to see our Mii's and our nice big screen HiDef TV! :)
